Many web sites offer trial periods for free single dating services. They encourage new users to sign up, create a profile, and search for matches. It is only after locating matches in which they feel they think they might be interested that users too often learn an unfortunate truth: these services are free only until the user wishes to contact another person or show interest in his or her profile. Often, those services can only be utilized by paying members. I tried several online dating services, including those claiming to be free Christian dating services. With all but one or two of them, I experienced similar results. Nearly all of the time, only paying users could initiate contact. Often, only paying users could receive messages as well. Moreover, I noticed a disturbing fact. Many of the sites contained profiles of the same persons. Worse, these profiles offered entirely different perspectives of the individuals who had written them. It seemed that often people described themselves the way they thought other people would want to see them, rather than as they actually were or as they perceived themselves to be. For these reasons, as well as the extremely disappointing encounters I have had with the people I have met on these free single dating services, I am completely unimpressed with the entire concept. I corresponded with and dated several people who, according to their profiles, were 100 percent matches with my profile. I found some individuals simply failed to answer many of the questions, and so the computers determined that no answer was equal to a matched answer. I found that some individuals, who during first correspondence, appeared to be interesting and mature, had seriously distorted cognitive processes or were incredibly delusional about their own personalities. I even met one man who stated definitively in his profile that he did not smoke. This was particularly important to me, as my asthma makes being around smokers a difficult and sometimes painful process. So I questioned him once again before meeting him to make certain and explain the reasons for my persistence with regard to this. He assured me that he did not smoke. I was flabbergasted and dismayed two dates later when he lit a cigarette in front of me. That was our last date. I have known several people who have been successful in finding their dream matches through free single dating services. I am happy for them, and enjoy reading about the success stories that I encounter from time to time. I don't know exactly what it was that made these dating experiences work more effectively for them, but I have personally decided that they do not work well for me. I met the man I married in the traditional, old-fashioned way, and there is something to be said for that. I don't know what a computer would say, but we know that we are a 100 percent match.
