Free Dating Services Are Underrated

In today's media-driven culture, free dating services get a bad wrap. Although no service like this can be perfect, they are defiantly, at the very least, a useful networking tool. The trouble with most dating services available today lies not with the service itself, but with the people who use them. This sounds obvious enough, but for a moment consider the mentally of a person who is registering for such a service. The constant ridicule from mainstream society might cause them to be embarrassed about such things and try to hide them, when in reality there is nothing to be ashamed of. Influences such as these can be seen and felt everywhere; TV shows Such as the Simpsons have poked fun at free dating services, referring to them as "abnormal". Fortunately, this is the exact attitude that is rapidly becoming out of date. With the constant acceleration of the technology, it is no longer a strange concept to meet someone online. The success of social network websites such as myspace and face book have led to the rise of online communities for many other things, including dating. The widespread advertising campaigns from companies such as E-harmony have begun to change many peoples perspective on dating services. However, they may only be replacing one evil with another. Websites such as E-harmony are business' whereas a free dating service is a tool. They are looking to sell you something. Because they have no product, they instead sell the promise of results. "Find love or your money back". Not only is this an unrealistic ideology, but it creates a new and not necessarily better stereotype. Instead of experiences feelings of embarrassment for using a service, they will now feel them for being unsuccessful in their use of them. Who knows which is better. High Expectations can also hinder the experience one receives from a dating service. Once again we may have advertising campaigns to thank for that. These advertisements portray beautiful people at their best and happiest. This sets up the hope that everyone using these services is going to provide this instant gratification. The closest "truth" to this would fall under the category of "love at first site". Keeping in mind that few will ever experience this and most do not believe in it, for a company to promise it is simply ridiculous. To be blunt, If they portrayed the regular couple or users of their service, they would not attract as many people or do such good business. It is the hope to find something rare that draws people to these "pay-sites". Instead , a person should go into a service with no expectations and with only the goal of recreational use. When it comes right down to it, that's all any good relationship is based upon anyway.
